Genesis 1:27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. [Note: God created humanity, blessed and pronounced them good.]
Welling Seventh Day Adventist Church
Bible Verses for week commencing, Sunday, 16 February 2025
Theme: In Ancient Times: Africa.
Genesis 16:11 : And the angel of the LORD said unto her, Behold, thou art with child, and shall bear a son, and shall called his name Ismael; because the LORD hath heard thy affliction. [Note: The meaning of Ishmael is; “God will hear”.]
Exodus 2:16-21 : Now a priest of Midian had seven daughters, and they came to draw water and fill the troughs to water their father’s flock. Some shepherds came along and drove them away, but Moses got up and came to their rescue and watered their flock. When the girls returned to Reuel their father, he asked them, “Why have you returned so early today?” They answered, “An Egyptian rescued us from the shepherds. He even drew water for us and watered the flock.” “And where is he?” Reuel asked his daughters. “Why did you leave him? Invite him to have something to eat.” Moses agreed to stay with the man, who gave his daughter Zipporah to Moses in marriage. [Note: Reuel the Shepherd Priest and, giver of good advice is also known as Jethro; Moses’ father-in-law (see Exodus 18).]
Song of Solomon 1:6 : Look not upon me, because I am black, because the sun hath looked upon me: my mother’s children were angry with me; they made me the keeper of the vineyard; but mine own vineyard have I not kept.
1 Kings 3:5-9 : At Gibeon the LORD appeared to Solomon during the night in a dream, and God said, “Ask for whatever you want me to give you.” Solomon answered, “You have shown great kindness to your servant, my father David, because he was faithful to you and righteous and upright in heart. You have continued this great kindness to him and have given him a son to sit on his throne this very day. Now, LORD my God, you have made your servant king in place of my father David. But I am only a little child and do not know how to carry out my duties. Your servant is here among the people you have chosen, a great people, too numerous to count or number. So give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong. For who is able to govern this great of Yours!? [Note: King Solomon asked God for wisdom and God blessed him abundantly with wisdom and understanding and riches also!]
Matthew 27:32 : As they were going out, they met a man from Cyrene, named Simon, and they forced him to carry the cross. [Note: What a great honour to carry the cross on which the King of the universe would be nailed and, suffer unto death for our sins. This man was from Cyrene, present day Libya, Africa.]
Acts 8:26-31,36 Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip, “God south to the road - the desert road - that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza. So he started out, and on his way he met an Ethiopian eunuch, an important official in charge of all the treasury of the Kandake (Candace: which means “Queen of the Ethiopian”). This man had gone to Jerusalem to worship, and on his way home was sitting in his chariot reading the Book Isaiah the prophet. The Spirit told Philip, “Go to that chariot and stay near it. Then Philip ran up to the chariot and heard the man reading Isaiah the prophet. “ Do you understand what you are reading?” Philip asked. “How can I,” he said, “unless someone explains it to me?” So he invited Philip to come up and sit with him. As they travelled along the way, they came to some water and the eunuch said , “Look, “ look, here is water. What can stand in the way of my of my being baptised?” [Note: Christian tradition (not Biblical) has it that the name of this Ethiopian official was Simeon Bachos.]
It is evident from this limited review of the Holy Bible that from early times God heard and answered the prayers of Africans. I hope to show in future weeks how the continents of Asia and Europe were also blessed. For now, it is fair to conclude from this review of the above Bible Verses, although short (limited in scope); that “Black is Blessed.”
