What Really Is Love?

Good Day

“Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” John 15:13 (KJV)

We are bombarded daily with messages of “love this,” “love that,” “love when,” “love why.” But what really is love? The world often treats love as a feeling that comes and goes. Yet real-life situations force us to ask deeper questions:

A single parent caring for their children alone.

Parents dealing with a rebellious child intent on self-harm.

A partner staying after betrayal.Someone forgiving the unforgivable.

Is this love?

Jesus gave us the definition of love, and it’s far deeper than human emotion. In John 15:13, He said: “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” And He went even further on the cross, praying for forgiveness for the very people driving nails into His hands and feet.  Luke 23:34 You might say, “But He was God; we can’t do that.” Yet Scripture reminds us He was also fully human: “God was manifest in the flesh…” 1 Timothy 3:16

And because of this, we have confidence that “I can do all things through Christ which strengthened me” Philippians 4:13

Therefore, True love is not a passing emotion. It’s a decision, a way of lifePutting others above ourselves.

Forgiving as many times as necessary.

Seeing others as children of the King, just as affected by sin as we once were.

Honouring God with all our being.

Love means loving the unlovable, even when it costs us much. God Himself took the first step. While we were still sinners, He gave His Son as a ransom for our sins.  Romans 5:8.

Closing Thought

Love isn’t something that comes and goes; it’s an action rooted in God’s own heart. As we draw closer to Christ, His love flows through us, to the unlovable, the hurting, and even our enemies.

Have a Christ centred day.
