A reflection on the victory of Christ and what it means for us today
It’s Sunday, resurrection morning, and all is calm at the tomb of Jesus. The guards are confident that the sealed stone covering the tomb will be sufficient to keep His disciples from opening it and stealing His body.
High Priest / Sanhedrin Council
On Friday night, the High Priest and the members of the Sanhedrin Council did not sleep well because they were worried. They remembered that Jesus had said He would rise again in three days, and they weren’t taking any chances.
Early Saturday (the Sabbath) morning, they went to Pilate and asked for the tomb to be secured.
Matthew 27:63–64 (NIV):
Sir, they said, we remember that while He was still alive that deceiver said, After three days I will rise again.
So Pilate gave the order for the tomb to be sealed.
Disciples
The disciples had scattered. They were afraid. Their dreams of Jesus setting up His kingdom and putting an end to Roman rule had gone up in smoke. It was one of the worst days of their lives.
Jerusalem
Jerusalem was buzzing with expectation. Something extraordinary had happened on Friday (Passover), when the priest was about to offer the evening sacrifice. The curtain of the Holy of Holies was torn from top to bottom. The priest gasped in astonishment.
Everyone was talking about these events.
So let’s go back to Sunday morning.
All four Gospels record the resurrection of Jesus (Matthew 28, Mark 16, Luke 24, John 20–21) as occurring on the Sunday after His crucifixion.
Matthew 28:2, 4–6:
Suddenly there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven, rolled away the stone, and sat on it. The guards trembled in fear of him and became like dead men.
But the angel said to the women, Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; He has risen, just as He said! Come, see the place where He lay.
So despite the plans of the adversary to prevent Jesus from accomplishing His mission to save mankind, with His resurrection, the enemy lost the battle. He was unable to keep Him in the grave despite his best efforts.
For many people, Easter is about eggs, hot cross buns, and Easter bunny. But for others, it is a time to reflect on that pivotal Friday two thousand years ago, when Jesus, the Son of God, became the true Lamb, where type met antitype.
Jesus, the Son of God, became the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world (Revelation 13:8).
So what is your position today? Do you see yourself in need of a Saviour, or is Easter just another holiday?
This season, do something life-changing; get to know Jesus for yourself.
John 10:10:
I have come that they may have life, and have it in all its fullness.
The resurrection changed everything.
