Bible verses for week commencing Sunday 17 December 2023

Introduction

In this short review I wish to take a look at a few Old Testament (OT) prophesies about the Messiah that were fulfilled and recorded in the New Testament (NT).

Theme

Unto us is born ‘The Promised Saviour.’

Sunday

The sceptre will not depart from Judah, nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet, until he comes to whom it belongs and the obedience of the nation is his.

OT: Genesis 49:10.

The revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave him to his servants what must soon take place. He made it know by sending his angels to his servant John, who testifies to everything he saw – that is, the word of God and the testimonies of Jesus Christ. Blessed is the one who reads the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear it and take to heart what is written in it, because the time is near.

NT: Rev 1:1-3.

Monday

I see him, but not now; I behold him, but not near. A star will come out of Jacob; a sceptre will rise out of Israel, he will crush the foreheads of Moab, the skulls of all the sons Sheth.

OT: Numbers 24:17.

Look, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, and all the peoples of the earth will mourn because of him. So shall it be! Amen.

NT: Rev 1:7.

Tuesday

I will proclaim the decree of the Lord: He said to me, “ you are my Son; today I have become your Father.

OT: Psalm 2:7.

Jesus said to them, “My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I, too, am working.”

NT: John 5:17.

Wednesday

Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son and will call him Emmanuel.

OT: Isaiah 7:14.

But the angel said to her,  “Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favour with God. You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob for ever; his kingdom will never end.”

“How will this be, Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?”

NT: Luke 1:30-34.

Thursday

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Of the increase of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and for ever. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.

OT: Isaiah 9:6-7.

“She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name of Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins,”

All this took place to fulfil what the Lord had said through the prophet: “The Virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” – which means, God with us.

NT: Matt 1: 21, 22.

Friday

“Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen one in whom I delight; I will put my Spirit on him and he will bring justice to the nations.

In faithfulness he will bring forth justice; he will not falter or be discouraged till he establishes justice on earth. In his law the islands will put their hope.”

OT: Isaiah 42:1, 4.

For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.

Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he had not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil.

NT: John 3:17-19.

Saturday

But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from old, from ancient times.

OT: Micah 5:2.

After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of king Herod, Magi (wise men) from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him.”

“In Bethlehem in Judea,” they replied, “for this is what the prophet has written:

“But you, Bethlehem, in the land Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will be shepherd of my people Israel.”

NT: Matt 2:1-2 & 5-6.

Conclusion

If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with his Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose. Do nothing out selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves.

NT: Phil 2: 1-3.
