Welling Seventh Day Adventist Church

Bible Verses for Week commencing Sunday, 12 January 2025.

Theme: Introduction What shall we do with the following ‘popular saying’ “God hates the sin but loves the sinnner.” This saying deserves some consideration; please read the following verses from the Holy Bible and let me know your thoughts!
Sunday

So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female created he them. Genesis 1:27

Monday

And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever: Genesis 3:22

Tuesday

For this is what the high and lofty One says - he who lives for ever, whose name is holy: I live in a high and holy place, but also with him who is contrite and lowly in spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly and to revive the heart of the contrite. I will not accuse for ever, nor will I always be angry, for then the spirit of man would grow faint before me - the breath of man that I have created. I was enraged by his sinful greed; I punished him, and hid my face in anger, yet he kept on in his wilful ways. Isaiah 57:15-17

Wednesday

Keep yourselves in God’s love as you wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you to eternal life. Jude 21

Thursday

For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. John 3:17-18

Friday

Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth. This then is how we know that we belong to the truth, and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence. Dear friends, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God. 1 John 3:18-19 & 21

Saturday

But now you must rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander and filthy language from your lips. Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator. Colossians 3:8-10

Conclusion

The popular saying (clichè!) in the introduction (“God hates the sin but loves the sinner”) should be abandoned or its usage clarified. God hates sin and He wants all sinners to repent and be saved. God sent His Son to saved sinners and there is no other name given by which sinners will be saved; but you can’t stay a sinner and be saved; the provision has been made to save all but, ‘you’ need to take some positive action. Yes; the Bible says: “But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us (Romans 5:8). However; the Bible also states: What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning, so that grace may increase? By no means! We died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? (Romans 6:1-2).
