Humility
Theme Verse:
“Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will lift you up.” – James 4:10 (NIV)
What is Humility?
The dictionary defines humility as “the quality of having a modest or low view of one’s importance.” It’s recognizing that we don’t have all the answers—and being okay with that. But biblical humility goes even deeper.
In Colossians 3:12, humility is described as “humbleness of mind.” It’s about the posture of our heart toward God and others. It’s the attitude that says, “Not my will, but Yours be done.”
It’s the same spirit found in Ephesians 4:2, Philippians 2:3, and 1 Peter 5:5—a consistent reminder that following Jesus means thinking of others more than ourselves, and relying on God more than our own strength.
Jesus, Our Example
Jesus, the Son of God, came to earth not to be served but to serve. He washed the feet of His disciples. He dined with sinners. He humbled Himself even to death on a cross (Philippians 2:8). That’s the kind of humility God desires from us—not weakness, but strength under control. Not self-pity, but surrender.
We first encountered this humility when we confessed our need for Him, repented of our sins, and accepted His gift of salvation. But humility isn’t just the doorway into faith—it’s the path we walk every day.
The Promise of Humility
James 4:10 promises that when we humble ourselves before the Lord, He will lift us up. He exalts the lowly. He strengthens the weak. He gives grace to the humble.
True humility opens the door to God’s power in our lives. It’s in letting go that we find strength, in bowing down that we are lifted up.
Reflection Questions:
1. In what areas of your life are you struggling to surrender control to God?
2. Are there relationships where pride may be standing in the way of healing or reconciliation?
3. How can you practice humility today—in your words, actions, or attitudes?
Prayer:
Lord, thank You for the example of humility You showed through Jesus. I confess that pride sometimes gets in the way of me fully depending on You. Help me to walk in true humility—not thinking less of myself, but thinking of myself less. Teach me to rely on Your strength and to live with a surrendered heart. I choose to humble myself before You today. In Jesus’ name, amen.
