Welling Seventh Day Adventist Church

Bible Verses for week commencing Sunday, 13 April 2025

Theme: Types: Some examples of “types” of Jesus in the Testaments (Old and New).
Sunday

Adam:
Romans 5:14: Nevertheless, death reigned from the time of Moses, even over those who did not sin by breaking a command, as did Adam, who was a pattern of the one to come. (See also 1 Corinthians 15:21-22; 1 Corinthians 15:45).

Monday

Moses:
Exodus 1:22: Then Pharaoh gave this order to all his people: “Every boy that is born you must throw into the Nile, but let every girl live. Matthew 2:16: When Herod realised that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with what he had learned from the Magi. (See also Exodus 32:30; John 3:16; 1 John 2:2). [Note: In all these examples, Jesus is more significant than Moses. Moses was faithful as a servant, but Jesus was faithful as the Son of God].

Tuesday

The Passover:
Exodus 12:24-28: “Obey these instructions as a lasting ordinance for you and your descendants. When you enter the land that the LORD will give you as he promised, observed this ceremony. And when your children ask you, ‘What does this ceremony mean to you?’ then tell them, it is the Passover sacrifice to the LORD, who passed over the houses of the Israelites in Egypt and spared our homes when he struck down the Egyptians. Then the people bowed down and worshipped. The Israelites did just what the LORD commanded Moses and Aaron. Mark 14:12-14: On the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, when it was customary to sacrifice the Passover lamb, Jesus’ disciples asked him, “Where do you want us to go and make preparations for you to eat the Passover lamb?” So he sent two of his disciples, telling them, “Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him. Say to the owner of the house he enters, ‘The Teacher asks: Where is my guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’

Wednesday

The bronze serpent:
Numbers 21:4-9: They travelled from Mount Hor along the route to the Red Sea, to go to Edom. But the people grew impatient on the way; they spoke against God and against Moses, and said, “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the desert? There is no bread! There is no water! And we detest this miserable food!” Then the LORD sent venomous snakes among them; they bit the people and many Israelites died. The people came to Moses and said, “We sinned when we spoke against the LORD and against you. Pray that the LORD will take the snakes away from us.” So Moses prayed for the people. The LORD said to Moses, “Make a snake and put it up on a pole; anyone who is bitten can look at it and live. So Moses made a bronze snake and put it up on a pole. Then when anyone was bitten by a snake and looked at the bronze snake, he lived. (See also 1 Corinthians 15:55-57).

Thursday

Jonah the prophet:
Jonah 1:1-3: The word of the LORD came to Jonah son of Amittai: “Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before me.” But Jonah ran away from the LORD and headed for Tarshish. He went down to Joppa, where he found a ship bound for that port. After paying the fare, he went aboard and sailed for Tarshish to flee from the LORD. (See also Luke 24:46-47). Jonah 3:1: Then the word of the LORD came to Jonah a second time: Go to the great city of Nineveh and proclaim to it the message I give you. Jonah obeyed the word of the LORD and went to Nineveh. Now Nineveh was a very important city - a visit required three days. (See also Jonah 4:1-3). [Note: Jesus showed mercy towards sinners and died to save them].

Friday

High Priest:
Hebrews 7:23-27: Now there have been many of those priests, since death prevented them from continuing in office, but Jesus lives for ever, he has a permanent priesthood. Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them. Such a High Priest meets our need - one who is holy, blameless, pure, set apart from sinners, exalted above heavens. Unlike the other high priests, he does not need to offer sacrifices day after day, first for his own sins, and then for the sins of the people. He sacrificed for their sins once for all when he offered himself. (See also 1 Timothy 2:5).

Saturday

Melchizedek, king and priest of God:
Psalm 110:4: The LORD has sworn and will not change his mind: “You are a priest for ever, in the order of Melchizedek. (See also Hebrews 7:1-3). [Note: Melchizedek was a king and a priest of God; Jesus is the King and High Priest of God. Melchizedek is without genealogy, no beginning or end - since there is no record of his priesthood ending; he foreshadows Christ, who is a High Priest forever].

Conclusion

The Levitical high priests were sinful and also required sacrifice for themselves; Jesus was holy and innocent. (See Hebrews 7:26-27). [Note:Jesus is the unique (untypical), only Son of God. Jesus is also referred to as the "Son of Man”, this points to his humanity, and the great love that God has for humanity, in that his Son came, ministered, suffered and died for our sins, but rose to life eternal].
