Self-awareness matters because following Christ is not only about knowing what is right; it is about allowing God to transform what is happening within us.
If we never pause to examine our hearts, we can become skilled at noticing the faults of others while remaining unaware of the attitudes, motives and habits shaping our own lives.
The ability to be humble enough to genuinely reflect on ourselves, our behaviour, our attitudes, our relationships and our lives is so important.
Honestly, I think we can sometimes become so focused on external circumstances that we forget to dedicate time to examining what is happening internally.
Self-awareness isn’t about constantly picking yourself apart or becoming consumed by your flaws. It’s about being honest enough to ask, Is there something in me that needs to change?
And it doesn’t matter how old you are, what title you hold at church or how long you’ve been a Christian. Self-awareness is just as essential at 15 as it is at 65.
We should never become so comfortable in our ways that we stop allowing God to correct us.
Sometimes we need to sit with ourselves and ask God to reveal the parts of our character that we might not even recognise: the attitudes we justify, the behaviours we excuse and the areas where we think we’re right, when perhaps we need to grow.
Because how can we become more like Christ if we are unwilling to acknowledge the parts of ourselves that don’t look like Him?
Growth requires honesty.
Self-awareness also helps us extend grace to others. When we recognise how much patience, mercy and forgiveness God has shown us, we become less quick to judge the people around us.
It is easy to notice someone else’s mistakes while overlooking our own, but Jesus calls us to examine our hearts before passing judgment on others.
So let’s not be afraid to examine ourselves. Let’s be humble enough to accept correction, mature enough to take accountability, willing enough to change and gracious enough to extend that same mercy to others.
Prayer:
Dear Lord, give us the humility to look at ourselves honestly and the courage to acknowledge the areas where we need to grow. Reveal anything within us that is not like You, and help us to receive Your correction with an open heart so that we may become more like You. Teach us to extend grace to others, to be slow to judge and to remember the mercy You have shown us. Amen.
