Black History Month is a beautiful opportunity to remember, celebrate and honour the contributions, achievements and sacrifices of Black people throughout history. But as Christians, it can also remind us of something deeper: God has always been present in our story.
Our history has not always been easy. Generations have experienced injustice, discrimination and hardship. Yet, alongside these challenges, there have also been generations who demonstrated remarkable courage, resilience, creativity, faith and determination.
When we look at the lives of those who came before us, we see examples of people who continued to move forward despite the circumstances around them. Their stories remind us that where we come from does not limit where God can take us.
The Bible itself is filled with people from dfferent nations, cultures and backgrounds whom God used for His purposes. God has never been limited by a person’s background, circumstances or by what society says they can become.
So, this Black History Month, let us celebrate where we come from, learn from those who came before us and recognise the ways God has worked through Black communities throughout history.
And perhaps most importantly, let us remember that our identity is not defined by the opinions or limitations of the world. We are wonderfully made by God, created in His image and called to reflect His love.
Your story matters.
Your heritage matters.
Your life matters.
And God is still writing the story.
Prayer
Dear Lord,
Thank You for creating each of us uniquely and wonderfully. During this Black History Month, help us to appreciate the history, sacrifices, achievements and contributions of those who came before us.
Help us to learn from their courage and resilience, while remembering that every person is created in Your image and has value in Your sight.
Give us the courage to make a positive difference in our own generation. Help us to walk confidently in the purpose You have given us and never allow the limitations of others to determine what we believe is possible with You.
Thank You for being present throughout our history and for continuing to write our story.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
